WHAT IS A DAMA?

DAMA is an agreement between the Australian Government and a regional government or representative to fill labour shortages in a specific area with skilled migrants

A list of the current areas where an employer can access an approved worker are;

  • Far North Queensland DAMA
  • Kalgoorlie-Boulder Goldfields DAMA
  • Northern Territory DAMA · Orana DAMA
  • Pilbara DAMA
  • South Australia DAMA
  • Warrnambool DAMA

A DAMA labour agreement is an employer-sponsored program, and individual workers cannot apply independently. DAMA’s allow employers sponsor skilled and semi-skilled overseas workers for positions they are unable to fill with local workers.

Businesses can also access the DAMA if they are actively operating in the above regions and the occupations that are eligible for sponsorship under the Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) are specified in each region.

A salary concession may be applied for if your business has a strong case and can show that the salary offered to a prospective overseas worker is at least what an Australian citizen or permanent resident could expect doing the same job in the same location.

Designated Area Migration Agreement’s (DAMA’s) provide employers, the local government’s that house them and the states with flexibility to tailor labour agreements to specific skills shortages a region might be facing. These are becoming far more popular now as the 457 visa is gone but is preferred due to the way the agreement can be tailored for a region and industry.

While some might think these visa schemes hinder Australian workers, they actually ensure that employers have proven they have tried their best to find local talent as a first priority. They also ensure fair and adequate pay and conditions for imported talent that is in line with what an Australian worker might have expected in the same role.
